LOCAL SHED ADVICE

Choosing the right shed for Birmingham

In Birmingham, many gardens sit behind terraces, side passages or tighter access routes, so we deliver your shed in sections and build it in place. With terraced housing, semis and flats; many smaller gardens/yards, it is worth checking the route from the road to the garden before delivery and making sure the base is firm and level. We can help you choose a door position, roof style and window layout that works well in compact gardens, yards and overlooked spaces.

RECOMMENDED FOR BIRMINGHAM

Practical shed choices for local homes

SHED RANGE

Our recommendation

For Birmingham, the Tanalised specification is our recommended all-round choice because the timber is pressure treated for rot resistance throughout. Standard works well for straightforward storage, while Beast is better for heavier items, workshop use or a more substantial garden building. Shelves, ramps, extra height and different door layouts can be added so the shed matches how you will use it. If you are storing bikes, power tools or other higher-value items, the Security option adds bolted hinges and lock fittings, a heavy-duty cast iron hasp and staple, extra door bracing and the option of security windows or no windows.

SIZE & LAYOUT

Choosing the right size

For many Birmingham gardens, 6x4 to 8x6 for compact gardens; 8x10 where suburban gardens allow is a sensible starting point. With terraced housing, semis and flats; many smaller gardens/yards, compact sheds often work best when the door opens directly onto the easiest access route and windows are kept to the least overlooked side. Pent layouts are useful against boundaries, while Apex and Hipex layouts can give more usable height where the garden allows.

SECURITY & WEATHER

Built for everyday use

If you plan to keep bikes, tools or garden machinery inside, make security a priority. A Security Shed, no-window layout or security windows, and a quality padlock are the safest starting points. The bolted hasp, lock and hinge details are a better fit where the shed will store valuable kit.

BESPOKE SHED CAPABILITIES

A shed built around your space, storage and everyday use

Beast Sheds are made to order, so you can start with one of our proven standard designs and then tailor the building around your garden, access, storage and working requirements. With hundreds of size choices, multiple layouts and a wide range of practical extras, we can go well beyond an off-the-shelf shed.

242 standard shed sizes
17 standard layouts, plus bespoke layouts
3 framework & cladding specifications

Sizes & layouts

Choose from 242 standard sizes and 17 standard layouts. If the standard positions do not suit your garden, access or intended use, bespoke layouts can also be made.

Framework, cladding & security

There are 3 framework and cladding specifications to choose from, including heavy-duty options. We can also add an extra security framework where the building needs even more reinforcement.

Windows & hatches

Add extra windows and choose security, standard or summer-style windows, with perspex or glass glazing and fixed or opening options. We can also build in practical hatches.

Doors & access

Add extra doors or choose standard doors, 4-foot double doors, 5-foot double doors, wider double doors or stable doors. You can also choose the hinge side to suit the approach and internal layout.

Roof, height & extensions

Choose felt or Onduline roofing, add extra height, and extend the usable space with roof overhangs or full extensions for sheltered working, storage or access areas.

Floor, base & weather protection

Specify tanalised bearers, extra floor runners, a breathable membrane and access ramps to create a building better suited to heavier loads, damp-prone locations and regular wheeled access.

Internal fit-out & practical extras

Make the inside work harder with partitions, shelving and workbenches. These can be combined with the door, window, security, roof and floor options above to create workshops, secure stores, hobby spaces and multi-purpose garden buildings. And if you need something else, ask us — many further bespoke combinations can be accommodated.

Heavy-duty, pressure-treated construction

The framework is a major part of the quality. Higher-specification builds use heavy-duty timber framing, and pressure-treated (tanalised) timber options and components provide excellent resistance to rot and decay. Pressure treatment drives preservative deep into the timber, making tanalised wood a very good long-term choice where durability and lower maintenance matter.

Our wooden sheds are built by trained craftsmen for everyday garden storage, tools, bikes, workshops and leisure spaces. By combining the right framework, cladding, roof, base, doors, windows and internal extras, the shed can be specified around how you actually plan to use it.

BIRMINGHAM CUSTOMER CASE STUDY

A Durable Garden Workspace Designed Around the Working Day

A Birmingham business owner chose a customised 12 x 8 Beast shed to create a bright, accessible and weather-resistant workspace at the rear of his garden.

Birmingham Beast Sheds customer who created a garden workspace for his business

For this Birmingham homeowner, the new shed was never intended to be simply somewhere to store garden equipment. He wanted a dedicated workspace for his business: somewhere durable, easy to enter and comfortable enough to use for long periods throughout the year.

“I knew I would be spending a lot of time in it, so it needed to feel like a proper working environment rather than a dark storage shed,” he says. “Good access, plenty of daylight and a building that would stand up to regular use were all essential.”

The garden already contained a large brick base, and making the best possible use of that established footprint was an important part of the brief. A 12 x 8-foot Beast shed provided the generous floor area he needed while fitting neatly onto the available base at the rear of the property.

Large five-foot double doors were chosen to make access straightforward, particularly when moving equipment or larger items in and out. The wide opening also helps the building feel more open and practical during the working day.

More daylight and ventilation

Because the building would be used as a workspace rather than occasional storage, natural light and airflow mattered. The standard window arrangement was expanded to a total of six opening windows, with three additional windows added to the specification.

“The extra windows were one of the most important choices,” he explains. “They make the interior much more pleasant, and being able to open them means I can keep fresh air moving through when I am working for several hours.”

The bank of opening windows creates a bright side elevation and gives the interior a more welcoming character. It also reduces the enclosed feeling often associated with conventional sheds, helping the space function more naturally as a working room.

Specified for longer-term use

Durability was addressed through two further upgrades. The walls were lined with a breathable membrane, adding an extra layer of weather protection while still allowing moisture to escape, and the roof was finished with Onduline rather than standard felt.

For a building expected to see frequent use, the more robust roofing material offered welcome reassurance and reduced concern about replacing a conventional felt covering prematurely.

“I wanted to make sensible choices at the beginning rather than have to upgrade or repair things later,” he says. “The breathable lining and Onduline roof made the whole building feel better suited to being used as a serious workspace.”

A workspace shaped around the customer

The completed building combines generous access, a bright interior and a strong heavy-duty structure. Its position on the existing brick base makes efficient use of the garden, while the customised windows, doors, lining and roof ensure it is suited to the purpose for which it was bought.

For the customer, the result is a clear separation between home and work without the expense or disruption of a conventional extension.

“It gives me a proper place to focus on the business, but it is still only a few steps from the house,” he concludes. “It feels solid, practical and pleasant to work in, which is exactly what I needed.”
