NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY SHED CASE STUDY
A 13 x 5 Pent Classic Shed Giving a Church Toddler Group Much-Needed Toy Storage
This volunteer-run Northampton toddler group needed a secure, practical place to store outdoor play equipment between sessions. By choosing a larger Classic shed and investing in plenty of shelving, they gained far more usable storage while keeping the project within budget.
This Northampton church runs a toddler playgroup throughout the week and needed somewhere secure to keep the children's outdoor toys and play equipment when sessions were not running. The answer was a 13 x 5 Pent Classic shed with no windows, a 4-foot double door, three full-length shelves and three full-width shelves.
The priority was not simply floor area. The group needed to make the most of every part of the building, so the extensive shelving turns the walls into useful storage while keeping the central floor space free for larger toys and bulkier items.
With a volunteer-run organisation, budget naturally mattered. Choosing the Classic dip-treated range kept the initial cost under control and meant more of the budget could go towards a larger shed and the generous shelving package that would make the biggest difference in everyday use.
Storage designed around lots of smaller play equipment
For a toddler group, storage needs are different from those of a typical garden shed. There can be balls, ride-on toys, outdoor games, craft equipment and boxes of smaller items that all need to be put away quickly at the end of a session. The three full-length shelves and three full-width shelves give the volunteers plenty of places to separate and organise equipment instead of stacking everything on the floor.
The 4-foot double doors also make a big difference. Opening up a wider section of the front wall means larger toys can be carried straight in and out without awkward turning, while several volunteers can access the storage space easily when setting up or packing away.
No windows for simple, secure storage
This building did not need to be a workspace, so windows would have offered little benefit. Specifying no windows keeps the contents less visible from outside and also leaves more uninterrupted wall space for shelving — both useful advantages for a shed whose main job is secure storage.
Choosing where to spend the budget
The Classic range is dip treated rather than pressure treated, so it will need periodic timber treatment as part of its maintenance. For this customer, that trade-off made sense: the lower initial cost allowed the group to choose the larger 13 x 5 footprint and add the extensive shelving they really needed.
It is a good example of specifying a shed around priorities rather than simply choosing the most expensive construction. With sensible ongoing maintenance, the group gets a very practical building and far more organised storage for its budget.
A full service for a volunteer-run organisation
Beast Sheds handled the manufacture, delivery and installation, which made the project much easier for a group run by volunteers. There was no need for the church team to organise labour, interpret assembly instructions or spend valuable volunteer time constructing the building themselves — they could simply have the site ready and let the fitters take care of the rest.
